Tongue Tie Release
The tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth with a thin piece of tissue called the
frenulum.
Usually, this piece of tissue is loosely attached, but in some babies/children, it is tight and/or
unusually short, holding the tongue down and stopping it from moving freely.
A tight lingual frenulum does not always cause problems, and many babies/children can still
thrive and develop successfully. In some cases, though, it can stop a child from opening its
mouth wide or moving its tongue correctly and as a result can cause functional difficulties
such as feeding from a breast/bottle, handling solids, drinking or even communicating.
Tongue tie surgery is quick and virtually painless. A small amount of blood may be noticed,
but with a small piece of gauze and firm pressure, it usually resolves without extra care.
Our ENT surgeon has extensive experience in the excision of tongue tie.
